Nighttime erection tracking with the TechRing

Published by FirmTech Last updated November 2026

Why track erections while you sleep?

Nighttime erections happen without arousal, so they are a clean read of blood flow, nerves and hormones. FirmTech explains that healthy men have 3 to 5 a night, and the TechRing counts and measures each one at home, with no sleep lab, then shows the results in the FirmTech app.

What the TechRing records overnight

Definition

What a nighttime erection reading is

A nighttime erection reading is the TechRing's record of each erection that happens during sleep: how many occurred, how long each lasted and how strong it was. FirmTech's app preview shows an example night of 4 events, 71 minutes of total duration and a strength of 82, plotted across the night from 11 PM to 7 AM. Because no arousal, stress or performance nerves are involved, FirmTech describes these erections as a pure read of physical blood flow, and a place where changes often show up before you notice anything during sex.

Research

What published TechRing research found

FirmTech's research summary on the TechRing and MaxPR reports that in recordings under 1 hour, erections had a median duration of 12.1 minutes with a firmness rating of 8.6/10. For recordings exceeding 1 hour, the median duration was 30.5 minutes with a firmness rating of 7.25/10. On overnight comfort, a peer-reviewed paper in Translational Andrology and Urology states that only two users reported mild discomfort after more than 4 hours of use, which was easily resolved upon device removal.

Are nighttime erections linked to heart health?

Researchers treat erectile function as a cardiovascular signal. Erections depend on healthy blood vessels, and penile arteries are smaller than the heart's, so circulation changes can show up there first.

Men with ED have twice the risk of heart attacks and strokes (around 6%) compared to men without ED (around 3%), and ED is recognized as an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease, per SingleCare. The TechRing is not a diagnostic test; share your trends with a doctor. See more figures on research by the numbers.

Common questions

Why do nighttime erections matter?

Nighttime erections happen without arousal, so they are a clean read of blood flow, nerves and hormones. FirmTech notes that healthy men have 3 to 5 a night during sleep, and that penile arteries are smaller than the heart’s, so changes in circulation often show up there first, before you notice anything during sex.

How does the TechRing track nighttime erections?

Wear the TechRing to bed and its sensors record each nighttime erection automatically, with nothing to do while you sleep. In the morning, hold the button for 3 seconds, place the ring on the charger and connect in the app to sync the night. The app then shows how many erections you had and how long they lasted.

Is it safe to sleep in the TechRing?

FirmTech says the TechRing is designed and studied for overnight wear and is safe and comfortable for up to 12 hours. FirmTech has presented research on the safety of a smart penile constriction ring worn overnight at AUA 2024 and ISSM. One verified buyer wrote that overnight wear takes some getting used to and suggests building up over time.

How often should I wear the TechRing to track?

FirmTech says wearing the TechRing once a week gives a clearer picture of your vascular and sexual health. A single night says little on its own, while repeated nights build a personal baseline and trend line. You can also wear it during sex whenever you like, since it records every session.

Is the TechRing as accurate as a sleep lab test?

FirmTech is studying that question. A clinical trial comparing the TechRing with RigiScan, the clinic standard, had 35 men enrolled according to FirmTech’s clinical studies page, as of November 2026. Until results are published, treat TechRing data as a personal trend tool and share it with your doctor for interpretation.

Does the TechRing diagnose erectile dysfunction?

No. The TechRing gives you and your healthcare provider objective data on firmness, duration and nighttime erections, which FirmTech says can help diagnose and manage cardiac and sexual health issues. A diagnosis comes from a clinician. If your numbers change or concern you, share your recordings with your doctor.
